Obituary of Katherine H. Murphy

Katherine H. ("Kay") Murphy (nee Slattery), 82, of Montville, died Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Kay was born in Jersey City, NJ, and has lived in Lake Valhalla, Montville in the home she and her husband, John, built in 1963. She was predeceased by her parents, John V. and Helen T. Slattery and her sister, Patricia Randaisi. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John ("Jack") Benjamin Murphy, Montville; her children, Judith Murphy and wife Sandie Barr, Portland, ME, Mariann Murphy and her husband Scott Travis, Wolfeboro, NH, Karen Roberts and her husband, Thomas Roberts IV, Towaco, NJ and Brian Murphy and his wife, Dr. Caroline Murphy, Montpelier, VT. Kay was the proud grandma to Amber Geores, Sarah Geores, Dylan Rees, Aidan Murphy and Grace Murphy. Kay was a faithful member of St. Pius Church, Montville. She was a graduate of St. Cecelia High School, Englewood and Katherine Gibbs School, New York. She worked for Kimberly Clark, New York, before raising four children. Kay loved her family, friends, traveling, parties and sports. She was happiest watching sunsets and walking in the moonlight on South Beach with her family on Martha's Vineyard as well as enjoying the company & laughter of her friends during cocktails overlooking Lake Valhalla. Kay was a strong athlete who skied the grandest mountains, played on winning tennis teams, coached her daughters' softball teams and rooted faithfully for her Dodgers at the 1955 World Series. She also traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe but her favorite spot was always Bermuda after honeymooning there with her devoted husband, John. However, regardless of the location and activity, Kay always simply loved being among her family. The family will receive friends at the Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Ave, Boonton Monday, February 3rd from 7-9pm. A funeral mass will be offered at St. Pius X RC Church, 24 Changebridge Rd, Montville on Tuesday, February 4th at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Kay may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
