I am stunned and saddened to learn that Al is gone—and so quickly, too. Of the many litigation issues I worked on with him, the ones that still touch me most concerned the well-bring of his family, especially a sister. Yes, Al was a consummate professional, but he was, first, a generous and authentic person. I got flowers from the Lapatka folks years back whenever I had surgery and Al made a big charitable donation in my name
I am a longtime survivor of an especially dangerous cancer, so when someone like Al dies quickly of the disease, I never know what to think or say. “Why?” Is pointless; we humans are not meant to understand, as Job teaches. Many people say to me, “You’re very lucky and blessed”. But maybe it’s the other way around?! Maybe Al and others are looking down and saying they feel sorry for we who are still on Earth? I actually hope so. I pray that Al has found peace and glory with God He certainly lived a full life.
