Mr. Fox was the kindest best teacher knowing how to be there for every student with love and praise. He inspired me to learn art therapy!

Don Fox was a wonderful teacher ad an inspiring man. He will be greatly missed. He managed to get a bunch of lethargic teenagers to THINK and FEEL about what they were creating. I had classes with him for 6 years- starting in 7th grade and going through my Senior Year, and he helped to mold the artist I became. He was more than just a teacher- he was a friend.

How sad to hear that Don is no longer making his mark. He was one of my dearest friends on the faculty at MLHS and he will be missed by many. He was a fantastic teacher....one of the best, and as a friend he was fun, loyal, and sincere. There are not enough words to describe the impact he made on so many of his students.
My heart goes out to all of his family. Virginia Southern McCrohan

There are many good teachers in the world and ML had many but Don Fox was the best of the best. No other teacher came close to how he would let you be you but yet in his own way help you grow. He wanted me to come teach at Craigmeir but I was not old enough to drive and no access to my own car when I got my license. I've thought of him so often over the years and would wonder what he's up to and if he was still alive. Now I truly regret not seeking him out and paying him a visit, I moved to Rockaway a few years ago, we were neighbors.
My deepest condolences to his family, he certainly lived a good long and full life and most of all, he had a HUGE positive impact on so many Lakers. Rest in peace Don Fox, until we meet again, I hear the Mtns are glorious in heaven!!

So fortunate to have Mr. Fox - Don as a teacher, and ski instruct with him at Craigmeur, and get to know his fine family too!
He such an awesome teacher - be in the art classroom or on the slopes. He cared deeply about one and all. He knew about being an inclusive teacher - well before it expected of all teachers!
He inspired me to improve my skiing and to this day after over 45 years of teaching skiing - I attribute that to Don Fox and how he shared his love of the sport and how he shared it with others.
I was not much of artist in high school, but you would never knew with Mr. Fox. It was all about doing your own personal best and always be yourself!
If anyone becomes half the teacher/mentor/parent/friend that Don - Mr. Fox was - you will be ahead of most!
Here is to a life well lived!
Thanks Don for all you did for so many!

So sorry to hear this. Mr. Fox was so influential in my life. I had him for art in high school and later went to see him when I was considering a major change to Architecture. He offered words of advice that got me through many low times in college and I carry with me to this day.
My sincere condolences to the family.

I was surprised to read this, as a friend sent me the notice of Don's passing this morning. I was also surprised to see that Connie had also passed away a couple of yers ago. I know Don and Connie from association with various art and music oriented friends who rented the cabin over the years. And I also associated with them when I worked at Craigmeur during winters. The Foxes lived in quite a unique setting up there by Splitrock. I miss those days and I will miss them both.

In 12 years of primary school, 4 years of college, and 4 years of graduate school, there is no question that Don Fox was the best teacher I ever had. His Art Class taught so much more than just technique. Through his process of creation and then presentation to the class, he taught rhetoric, respect, sophistry, critical thinking, challenge, and so much more. It was as serious as you wanted it to be, or as frivolous as your shame would allow. And it was all Don. He met the students where they were, and nudged them to stretch a little bit more, to trust themselves, and to take risks.
I was lucky enough not only to be his student, but also one of his instructors at Craigmeur. At the many gatherings he hosted at his home, I got to meet Connie, Daryl, and Shawn, see the horses, and touch the electric fence with a watermelon rind (big mistake, btw).
I hope Daryl and Shawn and their families know that I think of Don, and his impact on my life, often; and that whenever and wherever my Laker friends gather, it isn't long before we remember Don fondly.
My sincerest condolences,
Rick Himes MLHS '86

My freshman year at Mountain Lakes High School, on the first day of class, Mr. Fox asked each student “How do YOU define art? I remember he really liked my response (I said that art is the deepest expression of our soul) and made me repeat it for the entire classroom. I spent my next 3 years of high school in Rome, Italy and all his art lessons and life lessons rang true. Rest in truth.

The world won’t be the same without Fox. Spent so much time on the property and swimming in the pool. I can’t imagine him being gone. He truly was instrumental in shaping generations of children and showing that being an adult did not have to be a grind.
Safe travels Fox, you will always be a star in my universe. Deepest condolences to the family. We all will miss him.
