I was so sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. I knew Mr. McCoy for many years - from living in Boonton and from hanging out with the HSDC. Charlie would always say hello and chat for a few minutes whenever we ran into each other. A true gentleman and a wonderful person. My deepest sympathies and prayers to the McCoy Family and all his friends. God Bless You. Rest In Peace Mr. McCoy.

Joanne/Shannon/Meagan - We were so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. Even after 33 years on the west coast, I still have wonderful memories of time spent with Charlie, including countless hours riding along with him, dispatching while he was on duty, visits to your house, and adventures on golf courses. His warm, friendly, and helpful style embodied and modeled the best of community policing before that was a "thing". I learned so much from him in my younger years including a model to follow and things that I still use to this day, including engagement with our community while on volunteer patrol for LASD in our city. Condolences to your family and may he rest in peace.

I was so saddened to hear of Charley's passing and wish I could be with you in Boonton. He was always such a positive prescence and i have such pleasant memories of ea ch of you; as counselor for both girls, a memory of Shannon running excitedly across the gym with her Lafayette admission package Meagan developing as her own person and basketball player, and Mom firmly in control of it all.
The last time i saw Charley was at the luncheon for the Boonton HS Hall of Fame in 2019. We had a nice chat and he was so disappointed that Meagen couldn't be in attendance. Always gracious. I know you will all miss him. God bless you all

I am so very sorry to learn of Charlie's passing. I have so many memories of his kindness, strength, and down to earth wisdom. I offer my sincere condolences to JoAnn and Charlie's entire family. Charlie and JoAnn created a beautiful family and a wonderful life together. When a loved one passes, my friends of the Jewish faith will say, "May his memory be a blessing."
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone who feels this loss. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear JoAnn and family, my deepest condolences to all of you on the passing of Charlie. He was a true friend of the FBI and I thoroughly enjoyed the times we spent together over the last almost 30 years. He was my first friend in Morris County law enforcement circles in 1992, introduced me to the County Chiefs, their P.A.S.T.A lunches, and was always a professional resource I could count on for guidance and advice. We maintained our friendship after we both retired, met for breakfast and lunches, and had numerous telephone conversations that lasted forever at times. Charlie was a true professional as a chief and law enforcement officer. Above all, he was a great guy, a loving family man and true friend. Whatever our professional contact happened to be, we always found time to share the latest updates about our families. I will miss him greatly as I know all of you will. Once again, my sincere condolences. Bob Lenehan, FBI (Ret'd)

To the McCoy Family,
M y deepest condolences on the passing of Charlie.I got to know Charlie as a parent of an opposing basketball player. I was the head coach at Morris Hills HS for 30 plus years. I had the pleasure of working with his daughter Meagan one summer long ago at basketball camp. Meagan must have learned something from all of our sessions because every time I ran into Charlie he would thank me over and over again. Charlie treated me like gold and he was a true gentleman and the poster child for basketball parents and how they should act at games. Very sorry to hear about your loss.
Sincerely, Coach Nieman
PS Would love to hear from you Meagan when things settle down. My email is webm15@optonline.net

Condolences to Charlie’s family on their loss. Charlie came to my Driver Education classes at Mountain Lakes High School throughout the 80’s. He made a two day presentation to our students about safe driving and smart decisions. It showed his expertise, caring and humor and illustrated Charlie’s dedication to helping others. Charlie even got me to head out to Lehigh for a few wrestling matches! My wife Betsy referred to Charlie as the “Gentleman Cop”, which he certainly was. He was a great friend to all who made a difference. Charlie will be missed.

JoAnn, Meagan and Shannon - "Sui Generis" (one of a kind) comes to mind when thinking back on Charlie McCoy. I grew up in Denville and Charlie in the Boonton/Mtn. Lakes area. I ran with Boonton Heavy Rescue CD-DC and the NJ Forest Fire Service when Charlie was at Lehigh and serving in the Army. I followed Harmony D&BC and I too went to Lehigh with an overlap of '60-'61 with Charlie. All of these near misses. We started our municipal police careers in 1966, Charlie in Mtn. Lakes and me in Chatham Borough. Still no connection. I did connect with "Slim" when I became chief in Byram in 1971 but not with Charlie until I was about to retire in 1993. He raised the Lehigh connection at a State Police Chief's meeting and was always so enthusiastic about Lehigh wrestling as well as the future alumnae he was supporting. I always tried to speak with him at state chiefs' meetings right up until Covid19 made us go virtual.
Spoke to Charlie on a Lehigh matter just last month. I will miss reaching out to consult with him.
To Charlies' family, so sorry for your loss.
To Chief Charles F. McCoy - "Hand Salute!"
Chief Eskil S. "Skip" Danielson, ret., Byram Township PD

During my thirty one years at MLHS and with the Rec department, Charlie was a constant, whether it be words of encouragement, a joke, a helping hand, or a hug. One of my very best golf memories was playing a 4 some with Charlie, Bill Foley, and the the Chief of Police in Boonton. What a great day we had, even if our golf was not the best. The Irish may say they seek a pot of gold, but Charlie definitely had a heart of gold. It is with fond memories that I say 'so long'. May his love and memory always be a comfort to all of his family and friends.

Charlie was a Boonton (and Mountain Lakes) icon. He was a wonderful neighbor to so many on Lake Avenue. Even though I grew up and lived on the other end of the street, his mother Doris was our neighbor and he would visit often to cut her lawn or check on her. On his walks down the street to visit his mother, he would always chat with all the neighbors or tease us kids (making sure we stayed out of trouble, haha). I know he had a special place in my grandmother (Doris Hornick's) heart and I'm sure she was one of the first to greet him at the pearly gates, or was playing him a song the piano. He had a special place in many of our hearts. May you rest in peace Charlie.
JoAnn, Shannon and Meagan, you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

So sorry to hear about Charlie. As a near neighbor in Boonton for the past 15 years, a few times I would see Charlie in the yard and he would invite me to come an chat. Growing up in ML, we not only had a great relationship with Charlie, but with Ernie, Buzz, Richie R. and many others. That was a time they took care of us, and we had many great memories, of course there many about my family. It was an honor to know him as a kid and adult. I will miss him on our walks. Tim T.

To Officer McCoy’s family: speaking for myself, my sisters, and my Dad, Bob Mathieu, condolences and we know Charlie will be missed. Dad likes to tell a story about Charlie bringing me home from a Mountain Lakes High party, I was in no condition to drive. Officer McCoy found me trying to make my car work and brought me home, handing me off to parents. I bet many others have similar stories that show Charlie’s empathy and care for the people in town.
