Today September 29,2016, I first learned of Brother Babcock's passing August 20 (my birthday) in a Callan email to the masses. Saddened, I immediately reflected on my time with him at Callan from 1985 to 1996 and after. I wasn't a golfer, but we did spend time over the cocktail hour at various Pebble Beach and San Francisco functions discussing life. He was a lot of fun, a great family man, and had a great sense of humor in addition to being a good consultant. We were all blessed to know him. I'm sure he, Ann and Eddie C. are having a good time in another place.

I first met Phil in the early 1980's when he had recently joined Callan and was the consultant to a client of mine when I worked at Prudential. Little did he or I know that about 8 years later he would hire me to work in the NYC office of Callan and learn the consulting business from a master. He was a wonderful partner and mentor. Beyond that, he was a true friend. He shared his life with all of us and through his stories, I felt I knew John, Beth and Rip as well as I knew my own friends. Perhaps it was fitting that he helped me win my first client at Callan, Heublein Corporation. It was fitting since they were the US importer for The Famous Grouse, Phil's scotch of choice at the time. It was a joy to see his face when we presented him with a case of it at his retirement. My prayers and condolences to all his family. I hope you take comfort in the knowledge that Phil touched so many lives in addition to yours and we will also miss him greatly.

I worked with Phil during his last 5 years at Callan and in those five years he had an enormous impact on me. He was a mentor, a friend; someone I knew I would never forget. He was a great consultant and leader while at Callan, but more importantly, he was an amazing man with an ability to make you feel as though you had always been a part of his beloved circle of friends and family.
My sincere condolences to his family. He loved you all very, very much and was so proud of all of you.

To the Babcock Family:
It has been my honor to have known Phillips for more than 25 years, first as a plan sponsor, then as a consultant and most importantly, as a friend.
We shared a love for the investment business and an even greater devotion to the game of golf. Phillips was at all times a gentleman with a twinkle in his eye and a story ready to be told.
He was revered to the point that a group of us established the Babcock Cup the late 90's and competed for it annually. I believe Phillips kept the bowl after the last competition which was a few years ago. John Babcock joined us one year for the event, and we were delighted to have him with us. There was only one mission for the two day tournament: ABP. The winner could be anybody but Phillips. We tried to accomplish that objective but his twosome actually won one year and his grin was endless.
Looking back on his remarkable life, one could easily argue that he accomplished all he set out to do. He raised a terrific family of whom he was enormously proud, had a wonderful marriage to the love of his life, a long and productive career and an even better retirement. All of that with a smile on his face. We miss you already, Phillips. Gene

As a young analyst in the firm, Phillips took the time to notice me. As I progressed in my career he took a genuine and heartfelt interest in me. He had a special way about him, always making me feel like I was more important than I actually was. He told an off-color joke at a dinner one time that caused me to laugh so hard that I had to go to the restroom to recover and wipe the tears out of my eyes. I won't repeat it here, but I am laughing and crying like it was yesterday. He asked me to take over one of his accounts, the IEEE out of Piscataway, and in spite of the geographical inconveniences, I am still the lead consultant there after over 20 years. I will miss him terribly. The annual Babcock Cup, perhaps the greatest and most authentic competitive golf experience of my lifetime, will forever live on in my memories. Sadly Phil's name never made it onto the Babcock Cup as a winner (which, apparently was the main point of the event) but he was an inspiration to all of us who participated in it over the years. In his honor I hereby pledge to drink a bottle of Makers Mark (over the course of several nights of course) and think fondly of him with every sip.
Sincerely,
-g

Phil was a prince of a man. The first big time Corporate Treasurer I called on as a young consultant. He put me completely at ease. Callan was blessed to have him as our New Jersey office manager with a couple of encores! He was a constant friend to many who loved him dearly and a wonderful golfing buddy. Phillips set the standard as a human being that we should all aspire to be.

I am so sorry about the passing of my friend Phil. My sincere condolences to all the family. I first met him ( and Dick Catlett, too ) in 1980 when, as a newcomer to town, I signed up for the Mtn Lakes PBA golf outing. We had a grand time, ending up at RRCC that night.
In 1998 he was a sponsor for my joining the Club. and a supporter for my entering the Squadron four years ago.
We had many good times over the years and I will miss him.
I am in Maine watching over the older siblings of a granddaughter born two days ago. So, unfortunately, I am unable to be at St. Peter's on Wednesday.
