Obituary of Jacob Preston Katzgrau

Jacob Preston Katzgrau, 78, passed away on Saturday February 8th in St. Petersburg, FL. Jacob was born in Newark, NJ and was a resident of Boonton from 1962 until moving to Spring Hill, FL in 1998. While growing up in Newark he attended Barringer High School graduating in 1955, won the NJ State Teenage Driving Rodeo and represented the State in the National event finishing second. He was a member of the Army National Guard . Jacob worked for NJ Bell in many positions through his long career staring in 1955 finally retiring as a Special Services Manager for ATT in 1989. While a resident of Boonton Jay was very active in the towns scouting movement serving as Cub Master of Pack 201 for many years, Scoutmaster of Troop 1 BSA Boonton from 1973 - 1982 and as Committee Chairman for many years afterwards. He was very active supporting the local Boonton Area Council as a trainer and assistant on several committees, he received his Scoutmaster Key, Wood Badge Beads and Silver Beaver award for service to local scouting. He took great pride in being able to help many young men attain the rank of Eagle Scout and continued to mentor and support the Troop through their 100 year anniversary in 2010. He is predeceased by his wife of 27 years Margaret (Peggy) Katzgrau (nee Kane) and is survived by his wife Doris Katzgrau of Spring Hill, Fl, children and spouses, Kenneth and Maureen Katzgrau of Lincroft, NJ., Keith and Donna Katzgrau of Oak Ridge, NJ., Kathy and Charles Fox of Wantage, NJ., Kurt and Jennifer Katzgrau of Boonton, NJ., Karen and William Holey of Boonton, NJ. a step son Craig Hornyak, his 14 grandchildren and 1 Great Grand child. He was the loving brother of two sisters Grete Barone of Verona and Virginia Nicolai of Hamburg and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Jay's funeral will be conducted from Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Avenue,, Boonton, NJ with Visitation on Friday, Feb. 14th from 2-4 & 7 - 9 pm and a funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 910 Birch Street, Boonton on Saturday, Feb 15th at 9:30am. The interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Boonton.
