Obituary of Robert Lamont Sims

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert Lamont Sims, affectionately known as “Bubba & Big Rob”, passed away suddenly on September 11, 2023. He was born in June 1956 to the late Bessie Leoa Sims and the late Edward Finnegan. His grandmother, the late Marie Ferguson Sims, nicknamed him “Bubba” and he has been known by that name throughout his life.

Robert received his early education in the Boonton public school system.  He graduated from Boonton High School in 1974.  Robert studied at New York Theological Seminary, CUNY Lehman College and Marist College in New York. He was very educated in every aspect. Robert was employed at Vera Institute of Justice in Brooklyn, NY; Faces NY, Inc. in Manhattan, NY; and was a radio announcer for “On the Count”, a program on the radio station WBAI, 99.5 FM. In addition, he was a former producer (music) at WBAI. He helped those with AIDS, Drug Addiction, Alcoholism and those that needed emotional support. Robert was a jack of all trades and he was not afraid of hard work.

Robert was a loving son. There was no one more important to him than his Mom. He also had a very deep love for his Aunt Margaret and loved his family very much. Robert was a good man; a loving man; a gentle man. He had a big heart and true soul; he was a Godly man. If you had the pleasure to know him, you were Blessed.

Robert loved to be by the ocean. It was a peaceful place for him. He never forgot the people he grew up with and went to school with. Robert was always happy to see them and talk about the past, the good old days.

Robert was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed football, wrestling and track in high school. He would enjoy watching football and basketball. He knew all the players by name and their position.

Robert was pre-deceased by his mother, Bessie Sims Wilmore; and father, Edward Finnegan.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory, his Stepfather, John “Jip” Wilmore, of Irvington, NJ; his Stepsisters, Leslie Arnold, Morristown, NJ; and Bonita McFadden, Florence, SC; his Uncle, Eli Sims, Morristown, NJ; his God Sister, Renee Cunningham, West Palm Beach, FL; special friend, Joanne Leone; and a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
