William T. Callery
Decorated World War II and Korean War Veteran
William T. Callery of Boonton Township, NJ, formerly of Mountain Lakes, NJ, passed away at home on Monday, October 8, 2018, with his loving family by his side.
Born in New York, NY to William and Amelia Callery, William was raised in Weehawken, NJ.
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania – Wharton School of Business; graduated Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia and trained with 78th Infantry Division. He departed for England May 14, 1944; landed in Normandy D-day+2. As 2nd lieutenant replacement, assigned to Rifle Company in 29th Infantry Division, 175th Infantry, 3rd Battalion, Company K on June 10, 1944. Served with Rifle Company through 4 campaigns that concluded with contact with Russians on Elbe River, Germany at war’s end. He also served during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Captain. Decorations include 2 Purple Hearts with Cluster, Bronze Star with Cluster and Combat Infantryman Badge.
He fell in love with the late Ruth Hunsdorfer and together they raised their family of six children in Mountain Lakes, NJ.
After a career spanning 35 years, Bill retired as an accounting manager with NJ Bell Telephone Company in Newark, NJ.
Surviving are his devoted children; Kathleen Phillips, William Callery, Maureen Homnick, Mary Beth Greene, Jeanne Callery and Patricia Carollo; also 14 cherished grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. In addition to his beloved wife, Ruth, he was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Thomas, and sister, Ann Marie.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 9:30-11:30 am at the Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Avenue, Boonton, NJ followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial which will be offered at Noon in St. Catherine of Siena R.C. Church, 10 N. Pocono Road, Mountain Lakes, NJ. The interment with Full Military Honors will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia on Wednesday, January 30, 2018.
