Obituary of Jean Elizabeth Harris

Jean Elizabeth Harris (nee Metzger), 93, of Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains, NJ. passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, 335 Reynolds Ave., Parsippany, NJ on Monday, March 20, 2017 at 11:00am. Visitation time for family and friends will take place at the church from 10 – 11am. Jean was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late William James and Katherine Marie (Dally) Metzger. She married Ralph William Harris in 1948 and they lived in Weirton, WV; Wintersville, OH and Paris, PA before moving to Boonton, NJ in 1975. Jean and her husband moved to Cedar Crest Village in 2008. Mrs. Harris was a graduate of the West Penn Hospital Nursing Program (1944) and received a BSN from Carnegie Mellon (1945). She was a registered nurse and educator in various hospitals in PA, WV, OH and NJ. For many years she coordinated nursing training at the Troy Hills Center in Parsippany and volunteered with the Red Cross and with Home Health Services in Morris Plains, NJ. Jean had a lively and inquiring mind. She loved reading, music, travel and gardening. She especially loved picnics and making new friends wherever she went. Jean was a faithful member of Saint Andrew and served in a variety of ways that contributed greatly to the life of that congregation. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, her brother, William, and her sister, Patricia. Surviving are her children, Steven (Janet), Donna, Mark (Connie) and James (Kathleen); grandchildren, Caleb (Ashleigh), Kyle and Laura; great grandchild Penelope; and Jean's brother, Robert.
