Harlan was such a softie in many ways. He used to bid on the live auction items at the Sound Start Babies fundraiser. These were expensive items. But he would give them away immediately to folks at his table. And he would bid and buy the NY apartment stay or weekend at the shore that Russ and I donated and not use them. He just wanted to make sure people we didn’t know didn’t get to stay in our homes! Who does that?
We also loved getting random news clippings from Harlan. We have a file full of them with indecipherable comments written by Harlan. We were so blessed to be close to this special man and will miss him greatly.

Our sincere condolences to Harlans Family,
We had the pleasure of knowing Harlan the last 5 years. He was me and my now husbands first friend at christ church. It's rare for someone you don't know to come up to you and strike up a good conversation, but he did and he made us feel special.
We loved our chats and his bluntness and authenticity. Harlan never failed to put a smile on our faces and always wanted to know what adventures we were up to. He was an encourager in so many ways. We will miss his endless mints and all the news article clipping he'd mail us. Including the donkey calendars. We never met anyone like him and don't think we ever will again. He will be deeply missed and we were so blessed by his friendship.

Although I didn’t know Harlan well, I had the pleasure of knowing him casually through my early years at T. Rowe Price (1985 into 90’s) when he would come in and visit with us—particularly with Edward J. Mathias, whom I supported at that time.
Harlan was truly one of a kind. He was uniquely himself—quirky in the very best way, wonderfully direct, and someone you simply didn’t forget. I always found him to be kind, genuine, and respected by those around him. Even in the brief interactions I had with him, there was something distinctive about his personality that stayed with you.
Reading his obituary, I can see that the qualities I remember were just a small glimpse of the remarkable man he was. His philosophy of “Invest in People NOT Things” and “Be a Blessing” seems to beautifully capture the life he lived. What a wonderful legacy—to use your knowledge, resources, faith, and even your quirks to make a difference in the lives of others.
My sincere condolences to Liz, Vera, Brian and his family, and all who loved him. It sounds as though Harlan lived a truly extraordinary life, entirely on his own terms, and left the world a little better for having been in it.
May he rest in peace, and may his memory continue to be a blessing to all who knew him. Sending you hugs and love, Liz. I know you’re going to miss him. Lyn von Paris

Q: What will you never forget about Harlan?
A: Harlan, and Elizabeth, always teased me everytime I got into a car to drive. ( For those that don't know - I'm English). "Remember we drive on the right", he would say, and quite rightly so. "You're doing great," he would say. "Now drive on the other side of the road".
