Sandri was my only first cousin. I met him for the first time when he and his wonderful wife, Éva, came to Portugal on their honeymoon in 1960. I was eight years old and very impressed by this good looking man and his beautiful blonde wife. I remember sightseeing with my parents and them in the car and, as there was no room for me, I lay on the parcel shelf at the back with our small Pekinese dog Schlemmi – safety? Nobody thought of that in those days.
Unfortunately I didn’t see Sandri and Éva as much as I would have liked to over the years, as the distances were great. I saw them again in Portugal in 1974 on the sad occasion of his mother’s (Erzsok néni’s) last days and funeral.
Sandri once came alone to England, where I now live, and I really got a sense of how much he loved nature and flowers. We went to Wisley Gardens, the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society – a large and very beautiful place filled with trees and flowers; he kept stopping, saying in a delighted way, “de jópofa” (“how cute” or “how lovely”) and taking lots of photos.
In December 1999, my daughter Anna and I went to Mountain Lakes and stayed with Éva and Sandri for a week. We had the time of our lives. They were so kind and looked after us wonderfully! Poor Sandri was suffering with back ache, and Éva very kindly drove us around and made us laugh a lot with her wonderful sense of humour.
It was such a terrible loss when she passed away in 2020, and we miss her very much.
In June 2025, Anna and I returned to the USA to see Sandri, Ilona, Mária and all the family. I am so glad we did. He was interested in everything and shared his knowledge on so many different subjects but I could also sense an inherent sadness in him.
Sandri, we miss you and hope that you are now reunited with the love of your life.

Peter Bariss posted a condolence

My mother, Vera Bariss, was the genentic cousin, but emotional sister of Sandor's late, beloved wife, Eva, whom Sandor had to live without in his final years. Eva was "Buci" to my mother. They grew up together and made it to the USA in the 1950s. Although our family lived far away in Nebraska, the two women spoke by phone every few months, and saw each other sometimes. Sandor, known as "Sandri", came alive in my mother's stories many times. Sandor's sense of adventure, his humor, and most of all, his love for his family was unmatched. My childhood memories of him include when we visited in New Jersey. Clad in swim trunks, he read reams of chemical journals in a lawn chair, never seeming flustered by my endless interuptions, always up for an adventure in taking stuff apart or going somewhere fun. Dark chocolate always bribed him into revealing his "inner child". The Barcza family came periodically through Omaha on their way west on family road trips: They'd stay with us a few days. A large chunk of my adult life, 1988 to 2013 was in Staten Island NY. During these years, I saw Sandor and Eva, and their daughters and families once, twice, or three time a year. Sandor and Eva became my "other parents", and had profound impact on my life, and bonded with my stepson, Helwin, now 28. Sandor always had great stories of the past- village life near rural Hungary, the hardships of wartime and post war Hungary, and beautiful things in life that mitigated those hardships. We had endless rich conversations about geopolitics, people, science, and everything else. Sandor always liked pictures of flowers and travel stories. These kept us in touch from the time I moved to Hungary in 2014. In May of 2025, with my wife Timea and her son Mark, I saw Sandor for the last time. His legacy is immutable in so many ways, through his daughters, their families, and all that learned for him. "Jo utat Sándor bátyám! Love to the family, Peter Bariss

I'm so sorry for your loss. I grew up down the street from Sandor and he was always extremely kind. He always stopped to greet our family dog, Puck, on this way to or from the lake. I was not aware of his life story and his academic and professional accomplishments. May he rest in peace.
