New Jersey lost a champion for those with disabilities, the frail elderly, and disadvantaged. He spearheaded the fight for the Casino Revenue Fund which was funded by taxes on gambling in the State of New Jersey. This fund has added more millions of dollars in services and programs benefitting Seniors and the Disabled than anyone thought possible so many decades ago. Personally, Governor Codey helped us to overcome some disability discrimination by the NJ DCA Housing Programs, by answering our letter back in 2004, which allowed us to participate in the Homeownership Program. We still don't have our own home, but without his intervention, we never would have gotten the chance to participate in the homeownership program at all. We need more state workers and politicians who have the down to earth kindness, honesty, and the fight for those who have the least, especially the disabled and elderly. Many blessings to his family and friends! May he be singing with the angels and looking out for us all here in New Jersey! Laura

I was deeply sorry to hear of his passing. We often talked at ECCC, mostly about the mutual Funeral business we were in. He always had a smile and loved joking around . Richard you will be missed Mario Teixeira Sr.

The State of New Jersey lost a devoted public servant with the death of Richard J. Codey.
Throughout his career, “the Gov” was guided by principle, loyalty to his constituents, and an unwavering sense of right and wrong.
To many in funeral service, Dick was not just a public figure but one of our own. A third-generation funeral director, he understood the profession because he lived it. He remained a steadfast friend to funeral service, offering guidance, wisdom, and advocacy rooted in real experience and genuine respect for the work we do.
Those who knew him valued his mentorship, his authenticity, and his ability to connect always with a story, often with a laugh, and never without purpose.
May his legacy of service, integrity, and humanity continue to endure.
